Planet Ban - an innovative company that focuses on the ecosystem of motorcyclists in Indonesia under PT Surganya Motor Indonesia strengthens their commitment to environmental conservation as part of the implementation of the 5i principles (Emission Reduction, Conversion, Conservation, Protection and Mediation) adopted by Planet Ban in running a sustainable business.
One of Planet Ban's efforts to strengthen its commitment to environmental conservation through the implementation of the 5i principles is to prevent potential environmental pollution due to waste generated from consumers' old tires, which Planet Ban has recently begun to intensify. Collaborating with CarbonEthics, an organization whose vision is to restore climate balance, as the first step of this collaboration, the two parties processed more than five hundred used motorcycle tires that will become a wave breaking device (APO) that stretches 150 meters along the coastline of Bungin Hamlet, Tanjung Pakis, Karawang Regency.
Andi Harjoko, CEO of Planet Ban, explained that since its inception, Planet Ban has had a vision to use innovation as the main foundation in building a sustainable business. “Planet Ban continues to be a leader in providing sustainable products and services to motorcyclists in Indonesia. As it grows, Planet Ban continues to contribute to creating a better environment and reducing negative impacts on our planet. Not only does it reduce the amount of waste tires that end up in landfills, this collaboration with CarbonEthics can control abrasion and protect communities from ocean waves.”
Previously, Planet Tire has encouraged customers to leave old tires when purchasing new tires at their stores to reduce the negative impact of waste. These old tires will be reprocessed into useful products through cooperation with third parties. In addition, Planet Ban is working with official tire manufacturers to implement a no-plastic policy in tire sales at more than a thousand Planet Ban outlets, as part of its support for the government's program to reduce plastic waste.
Furthermore, Planet Ban has implemented a number of important initiatives to support its zero emission and zero waste commitments, including emission testing and periodic service, management of waste motor oil and tires and their plastic packaging, use of environmentally friendly materials for motorcycle parts, and development of new services to support the electric motorcycle ecosystem.
In the last 30 years, 69.28 hectares of coastal area of Tanjungpakis Village has been affected by massive abrasion. Waste used motorcycle tires were chosen as the wave breaker because of the elastic properties of rubber in tires that can absorb energy from ocean waves and break it into lower kinetic energy. Combined with bamboo, this wave breaker made from recycled waste tires has optimal potential to reduce the strength of high waves and protect the beach from abrasion effectively, while being easier to shape than other materials.
Agung Bimo Listyanu, CEO of CarbonEthics, expressed his appreciation to Planet Ban for their contribution and support towards improving coastal conditions in Indonesia. “The problem of abrasion has now become very serious for the survival of coastal communities in a number of areas in Indonesia. By utilizing used tire waste from Planet Ban, it is estimated that this initiative has the potential to improve the lives of 5% of the population of Tanjung Pakis Village affected by abrasion by 2026. This is calculated from the potential to restore up to 10 hectares of land and conserve 40,000 mangrove trees from high waves.”
The successful collaboration between Planet Ban and CarbonEthics to turn waste tires into wave breakers will serve as a clear example of how innovation in waste management can have a positive impact on the environment and society. "It is hoped that Planet Ban's solution can motivate other sectors to adopt creative approaches to address environmental issues and create sustainable ecosystems." Agung concluded.
